Replacing a Lost Social Security Card

By Rachel Pinch

April is National Social Security Month, and our goal for this month is to educate you about Social Security programs and services available online.
Last week we explained the step by step process to set up a my Social Security account. Today’s blog post will provide some information on requesting a replacement Social Security card using that online account.
If you have lost your Social Security card, you may first want to consider whether you actually need the physical card; often times knowing your Social Security number is enough.
You may be able to use a my Social Security account to apply for a replacement card online if you:
  • Are a U.S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address (this includes APO, FPO, and DPO addresses);
  • Are not requesting a name change or any other change to your card; and
  • Have a driver’s license or state-issued identification card from one of the many participating states or the District of Columbia.
Once you access your account, there should be a box along the right hand side with an option showing “Replacement Documents”; simply follow the instructions to replace your Social Security card.
